Eternity in our hearts – our life has meaning.
Have you ever felt that your life felt flat and lacked purpose, just like a cloud covering the sun on a summer’s day?
Have you ever reached a point where you find no pleasure in anything that you used to enjoy, or where everything seemed meaningless?
Or do you feel empty, and whatever you try, nothing will fill that void in your life?
A few years ago, I had a similar experience.
My descent into a life void began in my teens.
I was trying to lose weight after I weighed myself following a family event, as my dress felt too tight. At first, people encouraged me, but after a while, they became concerned as I continued to lose weight.
At the same time,. I was starting to lose interest in much of life and began to wonder about its purpose. My mood was low because I did not seem to feel anything, and I became more isolated socially, increasingly unable to communicate with others.
My whole life was very much the life that was going on inside. Many of the events from that period were difficult to recall, as everything focused on getting through my mechanical daily routine until I could sink into bed and fall asleep.
One day, I recall coming across an old Bible in my grandparents' house and opening the page to Ecclesiastes, a book of the Bible I hadn’t encountered before. The writer seemed to understand how I felt; everything seemed meaningless and was a waste of time.
As I began to pay more attention, I realised, like the writer of that book, that I had sought hope and meaning in other things—science, the paranormal, psychology, and religious practice—but none of them answered my quest for meaning and hope in life. Further on, I read another part of Ecclesiastes, which stated
He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet[a] no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.. (Ecclesiastes 3:11 NIV)
In addition to the resonance with my feelings of hopelessness, there was an inherent promise in this verse that, because God had created us with the capacity for eternity and beauty, He was the one who would somehow fill it.
God knows how you feel. He created that space in your inner being that nothing can fill except Him.
It’s important to remember that God can fill our hearts, especially when we feel empty and are tempted to seek fulfilment in things that don’t truly satisfy our souls.
Why don’t you consider writing down the verse from Ecclesiastes and placing it somewhere visible, so you’ll be reminded to focus on God and invite Him to fill you with His presence. If possible, take a few minutes to sit in silence and reflect on these words, allowing their meaning to fully sink in.
