One Thing Is Necessary

How do you prioritise your day? What decides that you’ll do one activity rather than another? Mary and Martha, two sisters in the following Bible story, had different ideas about their priorities. What do you think?

Now, as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman

named Martha welcomed him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lordd's feet and listened to his teaching. But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.” But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you

are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10:38-42 ESV)

Sometimes, when I’ve had a busy day with an early start, it’s been tempting to rush into the day without spending time with Jesu first, but it’s not worked out for the best because everyone else's agenda has been imposed on mine. Just as Martha was anxious and worried about many things, I've found in the end that it's been best to sit with Jesus and listen to what he has to say about my day, and I can bring to him my concerns about how I’ll get everything done. It also means I am more aware of his presence throughout the day and can ask for help when I need it or thank him if those things go well.

Spending just a few minutes quietening ourselves down, praying with the Bible, and listening to what Jesus has to say always helps us stay on track during the rest of the day and puts us in a better state of mind to approach our day.

So, going back to the original question. How do you prioritise your day? Spend some time at the beginning of the day considering the story of Mary and Martha. What changes do you think you might make to your day as a result? Write this in your journal. Reflect on your day and see if there are areas where you can make Jesus your ONE THING.
